ATBW & Onyx Impact's Information Integrity & Web Archiving (IIWA) Fellowship

We are excited to announce the ATBW/Onyx Impact Information Integrity & Web Archiving (IIWA) Fellowship! This fellowship aims to develop and equip a network of “trusted messengers” with web archiving skills to support their efforts in reporting and documenting Black life in print and digital media.
 
The program runs March – October 2026, and is designed to provide journalism students, journalists, and media professionals with the fundamentals of web archiving with a focus on addressing the impact of AI on media production and Information Integrity on the Internet.

IIWA Fellowship Program

ATBW & Onyx Impact welcome applications to the first cohort of the IIWA Fellowship. Selected applicants will join a cohort of 8 journalism and media students and professionals for an online training program in web archiving, beginning with a grounding orientation with in-person workshops, knowledge, and skill-building activities. Participants will be eligible for a $5,000 stipend and covered expenses to participate in the in-person orientation.

Note: Orientation is the only in-person requirement. All other meetings are hosted on Zoom, and recordings will be available for later viewing. For the in-person orientation, we will follow COVID protocols to ensure we take care of each other while traveling and meeting in indoor spaces.

Classes are held in the evenings (Eastern Standard Time).

To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants must be:


  • currently enrolled in (juniors, seniors, graduate students), or a recent graduate (within the past 2 years) of, a Historically Black College or University (HBCU)
  • currently majoring or minoring in Journalism, or a closely related field (e.g., Media Studies, Communication, Broadcast Journalism, Digital Journalism)

  • currently employed by, interning with, or regularly contributing to a Black newspaper or Black-owned media company

  • able to attend the mandatory IIWA Fellowship Orientation in person from March 18–20, 2026

 

Applications are reviewed by the ATBW and Onyx Impact Teams based on applicants’ vision to build web archives, their intention to create collections of web-archived content related to Black history and culture, and their commitments to ethical reporting and documenting. Reviewers look for evidence of a deep dedication to documenting Black life and culture, a commitment to learning and professional growth, and a strong practice of working collaboratively and with/in community. 

Applications must be submitted by Monday, Feb 2, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. PST. The application will include:

  • Questions asking for basic contact information, confirmation of eligibility, and a brief statement of qualifications, disability information, and accommodation requests
  • Sample of Work / Demonstration of Experience
  • An essay or video/audio recording addressing the following: 
    • What does “information integrity on the internet” mean to you?
    • Describe a moment when you encountered misinformation, disinformation, or missing/altered online content in your academic, professional, or personal life. How did it affect your understanding of journalism or the public record?
    • What interests you about learning web archiving skills as part of your journalism training?
    • What do you hope to gain from this fellowship, and how do you plan to apply what you learn to your future work in journalism or media?
    • How does this fellowship align with your academic and/or career goals?
